“These seven days changed my life once again. These seven days showed me another world I was oblivious to. These seven days made me remember how grateful I should feel for the life I have now.”

“Often times, when we teach others, we are in fact the individuals who gain the most knowledge. Although it is the second time I have participated on in the Voluntary Teaching for China program, the trip still gave me an entirely different perspective and experience. I travelled to the Guizhou province, to a small rural village called Wu Chuan. This village, although small, has a natural beauty due to its untouched natural scenery. Wu Chuan is also the birthplace of the Gelao ethnic group. Upon arriving to the high school, I was shocked to see how big their campus was. However, I was more shocked to realize that 6000 students were enrolled in this high school.

Walking to class, hands shaking and sweating against my legs, I could not have anticipated the amount of respect and appreciation I would receive from the students: I received my first love letter, my first military uniform, my first handmade flowers, and my first chinese novel. It is really the small actions that count and the memories I will always remember. When the day finally arrived that we had to leave the mountain I felt an emptiness inside of me, as if I was missing something: the chorus of cheers as I walk into my classroom, the songs that students would sing for me, the poems they would recite for me. These seven days changed my life once again. These seven days showed me another world I was oblivious to. These seven days made me remember how grateful I should feel for the life I have now. My students have told me that they will be my guardian angels always watching over me in the sky. I want to tell them that even if we never meet again, my heart will also always be by their side to help them reach their dreams.” -Bianca, VTC2018
