“To me, my students’ eyes, filled with their young, limitless dreams, shone even brighter than the stars I saw, and this realization filled me with a desire to protect and foster their potential.”

“Though this was my second time teaching on the mountains of Shanxi, the experience remained just as sweet as the first. Through boarding the plane, driving up rocky roads to the school, stepping into my classroom, and leaving it, all for a second time, I fell in love with the mountains and everything that came with it.

While this trip was just as impactful as last year’s, the two were different experiences for me. This time, with the end of high school in sight, I savoured every second of the week and paid utmost attention to my surroundings and all the little details.

Among the lessons I learned this year, one of the most important was about beauty. Even last year, I never thought about finding beauty in the trash-covered environment on the mountains. One night, however, I looked up to the sky. Against that silky navy backdrop, hundreds of stars were twinkling brightly at me, rendering me speechless with their glittery winks. It was nothing less than astonishing to find such a sight amidst the dreary conditions. The students are, in a way, similar to those stars. Despite living in such dilapidated conditions, they still persevered and worked hard every day. To me, my students’ eyes, filled with their young, limitless dreams, shone even brighter than the stars I saw, and this realization filled me with a desire to protect and foster their potential.

My beloved grade six class: Please take care of each other. Please eat well, sleep well, and dress well. When it gets dark, look to the skies at the stars. When it gets unbearably quiet, listen carefully to the mountains, where all the words I said in class and all the words I didn’t get a chance to will echo endlessly. You will never truly be alone, as you have all stolen a piece of my heart within you. Grow sturdily, and I hope that one day, where others grow into dainty flowers, whose beauty is ephemeral and easily crushed by the rain, you will flourish as mighty trees, whose beautiful branches can protect others from the rain.” -Jessica, VTC2018
