“Although I was easily tired from the long days of teaching, every time I walked onto the podium during class, I immediately became more energized from the students’ warmth.”

“Going to Guizhou this year was a touching experience, as well as an life-changing one. In Shanxi, I used to teach ten-year-old children. I want to thank them for the beautiful memories that I made for the two years on the mountain; I will still be waiting for them on the other side of the mountain no matter what. This year, in Guizhou, however, I taught kids who were the same age as me. At first, I was really scared because I thought I would not be able to teach anything to high-school students who were about to take their university entrance exams. However, through the approximately ten hours of class each day we had for the week, I learned that I, too, could bring new stories and lessons to them.

The students at Wuchuan Middle School were extremely warm and welcoming to all of us. I remember walking through the hallways and seeing all of the students shyly saying hello and always treating me like a friend rather than a teacher. Even when I made mistakes in chinese, the students would just gently correct me and continue to patiently listen to me talk about life in Canada. During breaks, they would even come spend time with me, take pictures with me, and offer me precious and thoughtful gifts. Although I was easily tired from the long days of teaching, every time I walked onto the podium during class, I immediately became more energized from the students’ warmth. To the students of Wuchuan Middle School: thank you for being so kind to all of us. I will never forget you, and no matter where you are, remember that I will always welcome you here in Canada. Thank you for the unbreakable bond that we have created. Thank you for changing my life.” – Katherine, VTC2018
