“Through Voluntary Teaching for China, I was able to reconcile with my culture and relearned how to love myself.”

“14 days and nearly two years… have come and passed. The me today is a different person from the girl who first stepped out of the plane in 2017. In that mountain so far away from home, I discovered a piece of myself that I had once thrown away and forgotten. Through Voluntary Teaching for China, I was able to reconcile with my culture and relearned how to love myself. The students I met atop that mountain, each of them both old and young, have taught me so many valuable lessons. They took my hands and welcomed me into their classrooms, giving me the priceless gift of stories, laughter and smiles.

Only now do I see how much each of them had to endure every single day. Yet they continued to greet me each class with beautiful, beaming smiles. I want to thank the students for sharing with me their secrets and dreams. I want to tell them, “Thank you for trusting me and believing in me.” Looking back, I realize that it wasn’t the students that benefitted or took something from us. In fact, I think it was rather us, the ones who went in empty handed and left full hearted.”
