“In Wuchuan, I was more than an English teacher; I told the students about my life and did my best to incentivize them to succeed in their university entrance exams.”
“Last year, we arrived in the dusty courtyard of MingXing School in a worn-down bus. In Guizhou, we were greeted with a nice hotel, surrounded by important figures and television broadcasters. We were treated like celebrities; everyone put in great effort to ensure our comfort. Lying in bed that first night, I remember thinking: is this still the VTC that I know? The way we were treated contrasted so greatly with that of the previous year that I began to question the nature of the trip.
Wuchuan Middle School is much better off than MingXing School. However, the students there are still innocent, unaware of the outside – their eyes still retain the passion of children, and they still remain trapped by Chinese educational methods. In Wuchuan, I was more than an English teacher; I told the students about my life and did my best to incentivize them to succeed in their university entrance exams. In one week, I feel as if I put in a whole lifetime’s work trying to help the students find their dreams.
While Guizhou differed from Shanxi, coming here made me realize the purpose of VTC: to stir the students of China. After one week, I had an answer to the question I asked myself the first night. Whether it be Guizhou or Shanxi, our mission remains the same, and I do not regret a single moment I spent in Guizhou.
Last year, I told my grade five class, “Work hard, and you will be able to leave the mountain. I, on the other side of the mountain, will be constantly waiting for you.” This year, I want to say, “My dear friends, I will accompany you along your path up the mountain to success. I know life may seem hard at times, but remember: nothing is insurmountable. Approach everyday with a sense of adventure; life is but a long, exhilarating rollercoaster ride. Do not fear – you are not alone.”
Wuchuan Middle School gave me a chance to rekindle the hearts of highschoolers.
I hope they will take this small spark and foster it into a bright fire. ” -Monica, VTC2018
