“I could do something great with my voice, and in that, I would inspire others to view their challenges as tasks rather than risks”
“As four years flew by, my experience at VTC was akin to waking up from a dream. I felt a mix of nostalgia and self-realization when I reflected on the trip. My purpose for attending VTC had always been to bring my experiences as a first-generation Chinese immigrant to a different environment and foster bold ideas. In the last four years, I adjusted to Mingxing School and discovered my passion and voice for mentorship in a class of fifty students. Their enthusiasm for learning taught me that there are no boundaries in testing your determination; I could do something great with my voice, and in that, I would inspire others to view their challenges as tasks rather than risks. The value of this journey comes from putting ourselves in the perspectives of others because we can then view the situation as something about others instead of ourselves. It takes a great deal of realization and effort to achieve, but in the end, we will recognize the power of selflessness.
To my students: thank you for being the greatest cheerleaders. We all know that I am flawed, yet you embraced me wholeheartedly. We are each other’s role models, but more importantly, we are a family. We were saddened by departure because we felt that something we held so dearly has shattered, but remember that the recollections of our memories will eventually lead us to reconnect.
To my past self, I value the amount of embarrassment I felt when I first taught four years ago and was at a loss to control a group of unruly twelve-year-olds. That was the moment I realized that I needed to challenge my courage to begin my lesson.
And finally, to my future self, thank you for being that small voice in the bottom of my heart that I needed to surpass the expectations at every point in time. The race has been stronger than ever because opportunities to succeed my competitors are infinite.” -Narisa, VTC2018
